Large propane gas cylinders are not generally recommended for use with BBQs. Gas regulators are there to keep you safe. A regulator controls the flow of gas from the bottle, through the hose, to your BBQ. Without a regulator, you would run the risk of letting too much gas reach your BBQ at once, with dangerous consequences.
