The most affordable van hire company in Australia is Wicked Campers. If you are planning on road tripping through Western Australia then you will most probably visit a few different national parks. In order to save you time and money I would recommend buying a national parks pass online and printing it before your trip.
This West Coast Australia road trip itinerary will detail everything you need to know about the main sights from Perth to Broome, including the most instagrammable spots! If you are planning on driving from Perth to Broome these are the main stops you will want to include:. You will need at least 13 days to comfortably complete this, if you have less time you can remove some stops from your itinerary.
This blog will detail my road trip itinerary from Broome to Perth but you can easily do it the other way around Perth to Broome. Depending on what you want to do I would spend around 1 to 2 days here.
The bright red rocks and blue water are quite a unique site plus the drive there is fun and gives you a good taste of what off roading is like! You want to drive out of Broome and turn right onto Crab Creek Road then follow it to the end where it splits. Personally I was a bit disappointed by this experience as I was hoping to take a photo like the one on the left, but the tide was out and the beach was covered in car tracks which ruined the aesthetic of the beach.
We spent the morning enjoying Broome before heading to our next destination of Port Hedland. This was a long driving day of around 6 hours, we only stopped once to have lunch. I would also use this day to stock up on food and big bottles of water for Karijini National Park. It has a super unique landscape with a number of gorges and waterfalls. You will need to drive about 3 hours from Port Hedland to get to the entrance of Karijini National Park.
I would recommend stopping at the Auski Tourist Village just before the park to fill up with petrol. You could also stay the night here instead of Port Hedland.
As well as filling up with petrol make sure you come to Karijini National Park with plenty of water at least 5l per person and whatever you intend to eat during your stay.
There is NO water or shops there. On your first day in Karijini I would recommend starting with the sites to the east of the park. Head to Fortescue Falls only 15 minutes from the car park and the Fern Pool another 15 minutes walk for a refreshing swim. Or try the two-hour return hike to the picturesque Circular Pool. Wake up early and start your day at the Hancock gorge.
It will take you about one hour each way. Please be aware that there are times when your bottom half will be completely submerged, unless you are able to climb along the rocks on the side.
Next head over to Hamersley gorge , about an hour and a half away from Hancock Gorge. Here you will find a couple of waterfalls as well as a big swimming hole surrounded by incredible layered cliffs. If you want to find the insta-famous waterfall then you want to head off the path to the right and follow the river upstream to the spa pool and waterfall.
Where to stay near Karijini National Park — You could either choose to stay near Tom Price which is next to Karijini National Park , however there is very limited accommodation here so you will need to book in advance.
As we were heading to Exmouth next we decided to stay an hour out of Tom Price in the direction of Exmouth at Cheela Plains. This will be a long driving day so I would set off early! Once you get to Exmouth you might want to drive round to check out some of the beaches at Cape Range National Park you will need a national parks pass. The accommodation was nice for the price but there was no cell signal.
If you are visiting Exmouth and the Ningaloo Reef during the whale shark season March to August I would use your first full day in Exmouth to swim with the biggest fish in the ocean, the whale shark! The Ningaloo Reef in Australia is one of the few places in the world where you can sustainably swim with wild whale sharks! It is an absolutely incredible experience, they are so huge but graceful! Definitely one of my favourite animal encounters in Australia.
Fortunately, there was a detour, as that's not always the case up there. It happens. Yes not uncommon at all for June. When we lived in the NW and came down to Perth in the June school hols as they were in those old days of three term years I recollect several times were we had to sleep in the car for a couple of nights til waters receded.
I guess my sentiment is "each to their own" and if you want to do the drive, then go for it. But as one of the other posters has said, there are long stretched of absolute nothingness between towns. Also, many of the towns that you would want to visit, such as Monkey Mia, Coral Bay , Exmouth or inland National Parks, are not on the highway routes and require that you exit the main highway resulting in an additional km for a side trip.
Fuel costs in the region can be up to 40 cents per litre higher than in Perth adding quite a lot of cost. You will also need full insurance in case anything goes wrong with the car and windscreen chips are quite common too. Both Qantas and Sky West fly to Exmouth.

If you are lucky, you may be able to see dolphins, manta rays and many fish species from the Coral Bay WalkWay.
Coral Bay is World Heritage-listed and is untouched and protected. Undeniably, it is a beautiful spot on the Perth to Broome drive. Cape Range National Park is out of this world. It is home to Turquoise Bay, which is one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia. We loved this beach because of its proximity to the beautiful Ningaloo Reef. You can drift snorkel just a few metres from shore and see beautiful fish and turtles if you are lucky.
Our top tip would be to be careful of the current, start snorkelling from the southern part of the beach and let the current take you down but get out before the sandbar. Do not do this if you are a weak swimmer.
Another incredible thing you can do in Exmouth is to swim with Whale Sharks. It is one of the few places in the world that run this tour sustainably. You can do this from March to August, and you can shop around for the best tour company. Karijini National Park is one of the most beautiful and unique places you can visit in Australia. It is also good to know that you do not need access to a 4WD to go to Karijini.
However, make sure that you have one if you want to go everywhere. Also, remember to bring water into the park with you because you will not find any inside.
Eighty Mile Beach is a great place to stop to break up your journey to Broome. It is a significant wetland for migratory birds from all over the world.
It is a great spot to break up the trip, and you can see an incredible sunset over the Indian Ocean.
Also, as the beach is so long km , you will truly feel like you are away from the crowds, and you can find your spot to kick back and relax before you start the final leg of your journey to Broome. There is also a caravan park if you wanted to spend the night here, offering camping, caravans and cabins. The final stop is Broome. Undeniably, Broome is beautiful and lives up to all the hype around it. It is most famous for Cable Beach and the iconic sunsets you can see from this spot with the camels as a subject.
