The influence of such artists gave Frampton a different template to draw from than most of the British guitarists of his day who obsessed solely on the blues. I wanted a combination of jazz and blues and heavy rock. That combination inspired Frampton to create a unique style in which he often plays around the melody rather than hitting it straight on. Unfortunately, his first successful band, the pop-oriented the Herd, offered limited chances to develop his skills.
Still, his fellow musicians recognized the elevated power of his playing. Steve Marriott, of the hugely popular Small Faces, approached him about joining that band, though the other members felt they were fine as they were.
It was during this time that Frampton got his first hint at how difficult and self-destructive Marriott could be. It was despair. Instead, Marriott ditched them and started jamming with Frampton, along with the ex-Spooky Tooth bassist Greg Ridley and drummer Jerry Shirley, the powerhouse foursome that became Humble Pie. In , they issued a brilliant debut, As Safe as Yesterday Is, but the album and its follow-up had limited distribution. His fourth, Frampton, began to turn things around.
But no one anticipated the blockbuster breakout of Comes Alive the next year. The sounds and co-production from Chuck Ainlay are beyond anything I could have imagined. We also just located his original Zildjian ride cymbal to complete the kit! A dream family of sounds and people for me! I, again, tout the praises of this stellar band and crew of great friends I get to share the stage with, and I hope you can come out and experience this very special tour, as Peter genuinely proves legendary!

Their album, Frampton's Camel , also sold disappointingly, but Frampton began to build a following through near-constant touring over the next few years. He broke up Frampton's Camel prior to the release of his next album, 's Somethin's Happening. The title would prove prophetic: the follow-up, Frampton , became his first hit LP in America, climbing into the Top 40 in and going gold. By this point, Frampton had amassed a considerable catalog of underexposed songs, the best of which were tightly constructed and laden with hooks.
He'd also developed into a top concert draw, since he was able to inject those songs with an energy that was sometimes missing from his studio outings. Plus, in concert, he often expanded the songs into vehicles for his economical, tasteful guitar playing, and his pioneering use of the talk-box guitar effect became a trademark part of his performances. All those elements came together on Frampton Comes Alive! The album was a surprise smash, rocketing to the top of the charts where it stayed for ten weeks and selling over 16 million copies worldwide to become the most popular live album yet released.
